The fall of Java
Recently Sun announced that they would opensource Java. In the past Sun has faced scrutiny from many opensource advaocates because they had not trully embraced the concept of opensource. Now they seem to have found a calling to it. Java had the potential to relaly become a very strong contender because it was very secure and the source code was closed. The biggest danger assciated with opensourcing Java is that every platform could be affected in the way of malicious hacking. While I appluad Sun on their concept, I feel they should have gave it a little more thought first. The company has lurched around and never really found any sort of a niche that has suited them. Project looking glass showed some promise but failed to materialize in any sort of big way. In fact I have not heard anything about it in so long it think it has been discontinued or at least shelved for the time being. Proprietary software seems to be going the way of the dinosour and thus support has become the lucrative end. Maybe this will improve opensource or it could backfire because they need to make money to fix it all the time. The broken it is the more fixing it will need and thus the more money for Sun.
